What It Means for Your Class Trip
Southwest Airlines Baggage Policy Update
by Alanis Naranjo

Heads up, class trip travelers! Southwest Airlines has recently updated its checked baggage policy, which may impact your costs if you fly with them.
Luckily, customers with valid group tickets issued on or before January 26, 2026, are eligible to check up to two (2) bags free of charge. Standard weight and size limits apply.
However, for your personal travel, customers with tickets purchased on or after May 28, 2025, Southwest no longer includes two free checked bags for all fare types. If your ticket was bought before that date, you’re still eligible for the original perk of two free checked bags (we even tested this—no fee was charged for a pre-May 28th ticket!)
For tickets purchased on or after May 28th, the updated checked bag fees are:
Basic Fare, Wanna Get Away Plus, or Anytime Fare:
- 1st checked bag: $35
- 2nd checked bag: $45
To qualify for the standard fee, each checked bag must:
- Weigh 50 lbs. or less
- Measure 62 inches or less (L + W + H combined)
- 1 carry-on item (like a small suitcase)
Note from Southwest:
“Unless otherwise specified, fees are represented for one-way travel.”
This means checked bag fees may apply both on your flight to and from your destination.
Pro tip: Try packing efficiently, sharing bags with a roommate, or using packing cubes to avoid extra fees. Overweight or oversized bags will be charged additional fees starting at $100+, so it’s best to stay within the limits!
