A Science Immersion in the Florida Keys

Journey with your students to South Florida where you’ll experience the Everglades and the Florida Keys.  You and your group will be guided into an exploration of many unique habitats including: mangrove swamps, tropical hardwood hammocks, wetlands, beaches and coral reefs.

The suggested trip length for a Science Immersion tour is four (4) or five (5) days.

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park is a U.S. National Park in Florida that protects the southern 20 percent of the original Everglades. In the United States, it is the largest tropical wilderness, the largest wilderness of any kind east of the Mississippi River, and is visited on average by one million people each year.

Anhinga Trail

The Anhinga Trail is a short trail (about 0.4 miles) in the Everglades National Park. Located 4 miles from the park entrance, it starts at the Royal Palm Visitor Center. The trail is a paved walkway and a boardwalk over Taylor Slough, a freshwater sawgrass marsh. Abundant wildlife is visible from the trail, including alligators, turtles, anhingas, herons, and egrets.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

John Pennekamp State Park is the first undersea park in the United States.  The park covers approximately 178 nautical square miles of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove swamps.

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is one of three designated areas for swimming and snorkeling in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.   This beach features remnants of an early Spanish shipwreck.  

Mangrove Trail

The Mangrove Trail is a loop hike on a boardwalk that allows students to peacefully view the mangroves and estuaries they thrive in.  The Wild Tamarind Trail winds through the park’s beautiful tropical hardwood hammock, allowing students to view many of the area’s native hardwood species.  

Dolphin Plus

Dolphin Plus is committed to the conservation and protection of marine mammals through education, research, experiential learning, and environmental awareness.  Their dolphin swims entail a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal for an unforgettable experience.

Dolphin Cove

Dolphin Cove is a marine education and dolphin swim facility located in sunny Key Largo.  Guests are invited to swim with dolphins in their natural lagoon open to the Florida Bay.

 

The Turtle Hospital

The Turtle Hospital has four main goals:  1) rehab injured sea turtles and return them to their natural habitat, 2) educate the public through outreach programs, 3) conduct and assist with research aiding to sea turtles, and 4) work toward environmental legislation making the beaches and water safe and clean for sea turtles.

Florida Keys Wild Bird Center

The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and release native migratory wild birds that have been harmed or displaced, to provide or locate a humane shelter for those birds that cannot be released, and to educate the public toward the importance of coexistence with all wild bird species.
